The
Essentials:

I’m a native Californian with a very specific focus—crafting spaces for homeowners who want to keep the look cool, casually custom, and well-made.

We work with clients in all fifty states as well as here in California wine country. Some are finding their own style and some are fully expressing what they already love. Some are entering fresh new phases of life and some are establishing their own streamlined, cleanly-designed space.

Regardless of where you are or what brought you to us, we’ll always give you a place for everything, a drama-free process, and a whole lot of warmth.

In the end, I wholeheartedly believe in the power of great design. Because a fresh, sophisticated home can make all of life’s transitions so much more beautiful.

The
Business:

Just like engineering or mechanics, interior design is very much about the details. During my previous career as a CPA specializing in audits of major corporations, I reveled in pressure, precision, and organization. Those skills have transitioned directly into the systems that you, as a design client, will see today.

As a team, we move projects from start to finish with a smooth hand and exacting management of the budget. I also own a general contracting company, which means you have the option of using one well-vetted source for your entire project.

The
Background:

In 2006, I was involved in a car crash that resulted in a traumatic brain injury. I suffered from short-term memory issues, lost the vision in my right eye, and sustained multiple fractures, including my skull, hand, thigh and all of my toes. I endured extensive rehabilitation and even had to attend driving school to learn how to drive with just one eye.

Once upon a time, I had been a hard-charging, successful Certified Public Accountant. My skills were in fast-paced, high-level work—traveling the country, meeting with CEOs, and thriving under pressure. I loved it.

After the accident and the medical leave that followed, I returned to work. But the struggle was intense—and life didn’t go on exactly as I had known it. When my ophthalmologist told me that putting pen to paper helps retrain the brain and aids in depth perception, I enrolled in an art class and eventually into the Art Institute of California in Sacramento.

Moving slowly but methodically, I earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Interior Design to complement my existing Bachelor’s Degree in Business.

I had discovered a whole new approach to life and I knew I had two options: I could choose to either live by design—or by default.

Ready to get purposeful, I re-evaluated. I explored design job options, documented my experience, and eventually opened The Shoppe at KTJ Design Co, located in an old candy factory in midtown Stockton. We have offered a wildly effective combination of analytic thinking and fresh, creative perspective ever since.

Everyone has a story that shapes their journey and mine—in hindsight—feels like it all happened by design.
