Linda called me many times before our initial consultation, and I began to sense that she was feeling anxious about our appointment. Finally I just asked her if she was nervous. She signed with relief and said yes. She was afraid we’d be judging her or that her project wasn’t “big enough” or “fancy enough.” I assured her none of that was true, but I also understood her concerns.

The truth is, yes, hiring an interior designer can be scary. Why? First, you have to let someone into your private space. Second, you have to make sure they are going to give you want you want personally and not some reiteration of their style.

Third, you have to clean your house before the designer arrives (ha—just kidding—that one is a myth).

Because we at KTJ Design Co want you to receive the best results from your design experience, I’m giving you a little bit of a heads-up.

Here is what you need to do before our initial design consultation:

  1. Answer my design questionnaire. This allows me to get to know you and your home a little bit. It also gives us a head start at our appointment so we don’t waste the first 15 minutes asking a lot of questions you could’ve already answered. During our drive to your house, Sandra and I review your questionnaire and make sure we’ll fully ready to provide an amazing design consultation experience.

  2. Make yourself a little inspiration board of the things you’ve liked in the past. The second half of your homework before our appointment is to create an inspiration file on Pinterest or Houzz. Not so tech savvy? No problem, read this blog post about other ways to create inspiration folders.

  3. Get excited (or calm down): Grab a cup of coffee if that’s what you need to get jazzed up, or pour a glass of wine if you need to relax. Design is fun, but not when you’re stressing out about it.

  4. Make sure all the decision makers are at the appointment. Every consultation that does not include both spouses is a failure. We pack a lot of information into each consultation. Your translation of these details to your spouse will not convey the whole picture. They need to hear and see it first-hand. Trust me!

  5. Make a list of all the questions you have. During our consultation, there is a lot going on and you might forget a question you had earlier. Make a list and review it before the consultation is over to make sure you get all your questions answered.
