House Tour: Luxury Living in a California Vineyard

Last year, our busy professional clients (physicians) asked us to decorate their family room. This year, they asked us to outfit their formal living and dining rooms. Entertaining, lounging and gathering are the order of the day in these Tuscan-inspired spaces. Nestled in a Lodi, California, vineyard, this home is the perfect blend of comfort and luxury.

Thanks again for all your work yesterday, Rip and I both really love the new living/dining room! - Erica

The Luxury Living Room

This cavernous living room with a glorious fireplace needed appropriately sized furniture to fill the space. We wanted to honor the style and location of the home while using a design that was fresh and welcoming.  Because our client likes to entertain family and colleagues, we needed to ensure there was plenty of seating strategically placed to maximize conversation.

We selected new light fixtures for the dining table, fireplace, and entry. We also added table lamps and a floor lamp. Although the room has wonderful natural daylighting from the two French doors that open onto the courtyard, we needed to add more ambient and mood lighting.

While the fireplace is massive and gorgeous, it is not centered to allow furniture to be aligned with it symmetrically. We tried many layouts, such as two sofas/ two chairs, two sofas/four chairs, sofa/loveseat/chairs and so on. We just couldn’t get the arrangement to feel “right.” Although a sectional was not an idea we originally thought of, once we placed a sectional into the space in our CAD software, it resulted in a sigh of relief because we had finally found the right balance.

Because a sectional is best anchored with a square cocktail table, we selected this one with a white stone top. Two zebra print ottomans double as extra seating when needed.

We needed to match the existing rug in the room (which we moved under the dining table) and found one with just the right color palette and pattern. We also added softly textured, high performance fabrics on the seating and pillows so that our clients don’t have to worry about spills or stains.

Our clients asked for a long dining table that would allow them to accommodate up to 15 people. We found this farmhouse style table and added barrel chairs covered with Belgian linen slipcovers and two long benches. When the French doors are opened to the courtyard, the table style allows indoor and outdoor décor to blend together effortlessly (stayed tuned next week to see how we decorated the courtyard).
