Would open shelves be a good fit for certain people? Absolutely! My dear son Brian could never close a cabinet door to save his life, and to this day, he still leaves them ajar. If you or someone in your household has this struggle, you’ll greatly benefit from having no doors to close.

The downside to open shelving is that anything stored on them will be exposed to dust, grease, your cats’ hair (eww), and they can be a real pain to keep clean.

If you still love the idea of open shelves in the kitchen, consider limiting them to the following items:

  • Everyday objects, like coffee cups, cereal bowls, and plates that you wash frequently

  • Cookbooks, which don’t show dust and are generally stored in the open anyway

  • Oversized items, like soup tureens and serving platters, if you don’t mind giving them a quick rinse

  • Wine racks, since bottles won’t fit behind the doors on wall cabinets anyway (and if you are like me, the dust never has time to collect on a good bottle of wine-haha).
