How to Make Your Bed Look Designer-Level in 6 Steps

I’ve always been fascinated with bed linens, and I enjoy dressing my bed every day. I’m real particular on how the sheets are put on the bed (the top sheet should be right side down, making it right side up when you fold it over – yes, I’m that picky).

This might come as a shock, but…

I like cotton sheets with 200-300 thread count. Higher thread counts don’t breathe as well. Honestly, my favorite sheets come from Target.

I also like the sheets to feel crisp. Back in my younger days, I would line dry and iron them. Oh, to have the time to do that now!

No matter the type of sheets, the fun part to me is all the pieces that go into bed linens. In fact, the bed linens make your bed the main feature in your bedroom.

Ready to create a bespoke aesthetic in your bedroom?

Here is what you’ll need:

1 | Euro Sham

This 26” x 26” pillow is a good foundation for the back of the bed. It is also great for propping up against when reading.  The decorative cover (sham) should be removable and washable.

2 | Duvet Standard Sham

This is a standard size pillow, generally 20” x 26.” This decorative sham should also be removable and washable. It should be placed in front of the Euro Shams.

3 | Lumbar Sham

This is a 12” x 30” pillow that acts as a decorative element in front of all the pillows on the bed. It is also excellent for propping up the knees to relieve lower back aches.

4 | Sheet Sets

When picking out your sheets you’ll need a fitted sheet, flat sheet and pillowcases. Look for a 300 thread count and 100% cotton percale.  I personally believe all sheet sets should be white and suggest purchasing two sets so you can rotate them each week when laundering.

5 | Duvet Cover

The duvet cover goes over the duvet insert. Standard duvet covers have button closures, but fancier designs have ties on the inside to hold the duvet in place.

6 | Quilts

Quilts are the perfect year-round layering piece. Fold it in an accordion fashion at the foot of the bed, then pull up and over you for those quick afternoon naps.
